specifically jaqueline wilson. she is england's most awarded teen writer, and is crap. totally, utterly, gendered, poorly written, slow, tedious, crap. i am so baffled by her popularity. specifically, her awarded popularity. i like trashy books, especially trashy teen books, much more than the next person. but there are so many Better titles out there.
scott westerfield is going to be my example. his 'uglies' 'pretties' and 'specials' books are taut, intelligent and meaningful. they are clearly aimed beyond gendered, don't write with the assumption that the soul interest of the teenage girl is romance, include more complex storylines, complex characters, and satisfying twists.
wilson has a limp, overwraught style. slightly hysterical even. it's akin to overacting, and is so inauthentic that i feel like slapping all the characters.
julie-anne peters writes girl problem novels. bett william's 'girl walking backwards', and sara ryan's 'empress of the world' are both romances, admittedly queer, but with intellegent, strong, complex girls - not drivelly, petty, two dimensional cookie cut out stereotypes.
rant over.
icecream makes a delicious delicious deeeelicious lunch.

Too many people go for the obvious. If they have very limited intelligence and few actual life experiences, they can't write a complex book. It seems that most people go for the obvious and overlook the subtle underlays of plot enhancement, character development and mystery.
Take for instance so called comedy. Instead of using a normal situation and exaggerating it to make it funny, they go for the little kid kicking his/her daddy in the junk. The easy road.
Happy New Year to you and yours! I hope you have a great year in 2007 and continue on your journey to self.
